Daily Antiwhelm #12

You’re Allowed to Change Your Mind

“That’s just who I am.”

When did you last check?

One experience became the rule

You tried something years ago. It went badly.

Now you say you’re not good at it. You don’t like it. You’re not that kind of person.

Maybe you didn’t like that class. Maybe the instructions were terrible. Maybe you were tired, broke, or doing it because someone else thought you should.

But the explanation got shorter over time.

“I tried it once” became “I don’t do that.”

An old opinion about yourself is not a fact.

You can check again

You don’t have to retry everything you disliked. Plenty of things deserve to stay off your list.

But if you want to try something now, you can. You don’t need to defend the person you were when you first decided.

Take a different class. Try the easier version. Go once and see.

You can also change your mind about something you used to enjoy. Years of liking it do not require another year.

The Antiwhelm Move

Catch one sentence that starts with “I always,” “I never,” or “I’m just not.”

Is it still true? Or have you been repeating it without checking?

If you’re curious, try it again.

You’re allowed to give a different answer now.
