Daily Antiwhelm #19
Rest Isn’t a Prize.
You’re tired. But the kitchen isn’t clean, there’s an email you haven’t answered, and you promised yourself you’d get one more thing done.
So you keep going.
You’re barely paying attention. You’ve read the same sentence three times. You’re annoyed at everyone who asks you anything. But stopping feels wrong because there’s still work to do.
There will still be work to do tomorrow, too.
Stop making yourself earn it
Somewhere along the way, you decided rest comes after everything else. Finish the work. Handle the house. Take care of everyone. Then, if there’s time, take a break.
When has that ever left you enough?
You don’t wait until the car has completed every possible trip before putting gas in it. But you expect yourself to keep going until the list is empty.
The list is never empty.
You don’t get extra points for burning out. Nobody hands you a medal for answering emails with a headache or folding laundry when you can barely keep your eyes open.
You just end up exhausted. And the laundry comes back anyway.
You’re human
Your body needs rest, even when there’s more to do. Even when somebody else seems to be doing more. Even when you didn’t get as much done as you wanted.
You don’t need an impressive reason. You don’t need to prove you’ve had a hard enough day.
And please don’t turn the break into another thing to get right. You don’t need a routine, a special drink, or an app that tells you how well you relaxed.
Sit down. Lie down. Go outside. Leave the dishes.
Rest can just be rest.
The Antiwhelm Move
Catch the next “I’ll stop after…” before you add another condition.
Ask: Does this need to be done now, or do I just feel guilty leaving it?
If it can wait, let it wait.
You don’t have to push yourself until stopping becomes the only option.
Take the break.
