Small Things Make You Happy
You make coffee. It tastes good. Your favorite song comes on. There is nothing you have to rush to for the next hour.
For a few minutes, life is pretty good.
Then you check your phone, remember the laundry, and start thinking about everything you haven’t finished.
The good part was right there. You rushed past it.
Stop waiting for something big
We are quick to count what went wrong. The bad meeting. The unexpected bill. The thing that didn’t go the way we wanted.
But a good meal? Fresh sheets? Rain on the window? A walk without a schedule? Somehow those barely count.
It is easy to tell yourself you will be happy when you get a new job, a different house, more money, or finally get everything handled.
Want those things. Go after them. Just don’t put the rest of your life on hold while you do.
If only the big days count, you are missing an awful lot of good ones.
Not everything you enjoy needs improving
You take a walk, and now you need a step goal. You read a book, and now there is a reading target. You get a free afternoon, and you feel guilty for not doing something useful.
Why?
A workout can just feel good. Your favorite show doesn’t have to teach you anything. A day with no plans can stay that way.
You don’t need to earn every enjoyable moment by finishing something first.
The Antiwhelm Move
Think about one small thing you genuinely enjoy. Coffee. Music. A favorite meal. Ten minutes with nothing to do.
The next time it happens, let yourself enjoy it. Don’t turn it into a gratitude exercise, a new routine, or another thing to track.
Just enjoy it.
Those aren’t the little things you do while waiting for life to get good. They are part of your life.
Your life is not a project. Go live it.
This is Antiwhelm.
