Daily Antiwhelm #2
Your Life Is Not a Project
That finished version of your life you’re supposed to turn in Friday?
Yeah. There isn’t one.
Who set the deadline?
A project has tasks, milestones, and a due date.
So where did these come from?
- Career by 30.
- House by 35.
- Body fixed by summer.
- A five-year plan for the next five-year plan.
Who picked those dates? If you don’t know, why are you following them?
You keep moving the finish line on a project that doesn’t exist.
Stop making yourself the assignment
Pay the bill. Finish the work that has a real deadline.
But “I should be further along by now” isn’t a deadline. It’s a sentence you’ve said so often it started sounding like one.
Want a different job? Apply. Want a different house? Look.
You’re here. Start here.
And while you’re here:
- Take a walk without counting it.
- Read a novel without learning anything.
- Watch TV without calling it a guilty pleasure.
- Take a day off without proving you used it well.
Those things count as living.
The Antiwhelm Move
Pick one “I should have done this by now.”
- Do you still want it?
- If yes, take a step.
- If no, stop chasing it.
Drop “by now” either way.
There is no final version of your life to turn in.
