Be You

Trying to be the version of yourself everyone else prefers is a lot of work.

You agree when you don’t. Say yes when you mean no. Keep your opinions to yourself because someone might not like them.

Each moment seems small. Together, they can turn your own life into a part you have to keep playing.

When being agreeable becomes a job

You’re at dinner and someone says something you disagree with. You smile and let it go because you don’t want an argument.

A friend asks for a favor when you’re already busy. You say yes, then spend the evening figuring out where to squeeze it in.

Someone invites you somewhere you don’t want to go. Instead of declining, you agree and start thinking of an excuse to cancel.

Sometimes you compromise because a relationship matters. That’s part of life. But when every choice depends on keeping everyone else happy, the compromise is usually you.

You start checking what you say, what you want, and how you act against what someone else might think.

And for what? So people can approve of someone you’re pretending to be?

Not everyone has to like you

Some people won’t agree with your choices. Some won’t understand them. Some will miss the version of you who never said no.

They’re allowed to feel that way. You’re allowed to make your own decisions anyway.

You don’t need to explain every preference or defend every harmless choice. And you don’t have to become someone else just to avoid disappointing somebody.

People can dislike a decision without that decision being wrong.

The Antiwhelm Move

Notice one place where you’re playing a part to avoid someone else’s reaction.

Maybe you agree with something you don’t believe. Maybe you say yes before checking whether you want to. Maybe you hide a part of yourself because it’s easier.

Next time, skip the performance. Say what you think. Give a simple no. Wear what you like. Let your answer stand.

You don’t need a dramatic announcement or a brand-new personality.

You just need to stop asking everyone else to approve of the one you already have.

Some people won’t like it.

Let them.

You don’t have to play a part to belong.

This is Antiwhelm.
