Not Everyone Has to Like You

You tell someone you’re staying home Saturday. They go quiet. You explain that you’re tired, you’ve had a long week, and you’ve got things to do.

They still seem annoyed. So now you’re wondering whether to go anyway.

Ten minutes ago, you knew what you wanted. Now you’re negotiating with yourself because someone else didn’t like the answer.

You can’t manage everyone’s opinion

One friend thinks you work too much. Another thinks you should be doing more. Someone likes the way you used to be. Someone else has an opinion about your clothes, your choices, or how you spend your money.

You could spend the whole day adjusting yourself for different people and still disappoint somebody by dinner.

Sometimes you’ve made a mistake and need to own it. Listen when someone has a real concern. Apologize when you should. But a person’s disappointment isn’t automatically proof you’ve done something wrong.

They can dislike your decision. You can still make it.

Being liked is not the same as living well

You laugh at a joke you don’t find funny. Agree to plans you don’t want. Keep an opinion to yourself because the room might disagree.

None of those moments seems important on its own. But keep doing it and eventually you’re building a life around what everyone else will approve of.

Being considerate matters. Pretending to be someone else so nobody gets uncomfortable is a different job. And it’s one you’ll never finish.

The people who know you can handle a different opinion, a declined invitation, or a choice they wouldn’t make themselves. They don’t have to love every part of you to care about you.

The Antiwhelm Move

The next time you catch yourself changing a harmless choice just to keep someone happy, ask: Did I do something wrong, or do they simply not like my decision?

If you owe an explanation or an apology, give it. If you don’t, stop trying to win the vote.

Choose the restaurant. Wear the outfit. Stay home. Say what you actually think without making it a fight.

You don’t need to be difficult. You don’t need to be everybody’s favorite, either.

Let them have their opinion. Keep your life.

Your life is not a project. Go live it.

This is Antiwhelm.
